Helix Molecular Visualisations

This page contains the molecular visualisations referred to in the notes on helices which you can use to help you understand helix structure. All you need to do is load the structure into Jmol by

Figure 1.11 A polyalanine helix as an example of an 'ideal' helix

Use Jmol commands and scripts to manipulate the alpha helix and vary the display. You may also like to try to following commands to help you visualise the helix. You may enter these commands manually directly into the command line or copy and paste them into a script file which you can then load into Jmol. Please also take the time to interact, and experiment, with your own commands to visualise this structure! The file you need for this is ahelix.pdb *Please note that presently this structure isn't represented correctly in Jmol.

Figure 1.12 Helix from myoglobin

Use Jmol to manipulate the protein and experiment with the menu to vary the display. The file is: myoglobin
